On the morning of the 27th, Gwangju City announced that it signed a business agreement for the "Fostering of the Republic of Korea's Artificial Intelligence Industry" at the City Hall Business Room, attended by Mayor Lee Yong-seop and Moon Yong-sik, Director of the National Information Society Agency.
The National Information Society Agency is a government-funded public institution established with the purpose of maximizing the innovation potential of intelligent information technology to achieve innovative growth and social value realization across the national society.
In particular, it serves as the dedicated agency for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s public-private cooperation project, the "Big Data Platform and Center Construction Project," supporting the creation of a data-based ecosystem by analyzing and distributing data on platforms and discovering innovative services.
Through the business agreement, Gwangju City and the National Information Society Agency agreed to work together for the successful construction and activation of the Gwangju AI Data Center and to mutually cooperate in creating a data-based AI industry ecosystem, which is the core of artificial intelligence.
The main contents of the agreement include ▲ matters related to the overall use of data from the Big Data Platform and Center ▲ mutual cooperation necessary for the construction and operation of AI Data Centers such as AI Hub ▲ utilization and foundation building of public data ▲ review of Gwangju’s role as a base for the National Information Society Agency’s cooperation within the Gwangju AI cluster. In particular, they agreed to strengthen collaboration and discover cooperative tasks to respond to the post-COVID-19 era.
Gwangju City expects that by establishing a foundation that allows easy use of data from the Big Data Platform built by NIA and AI training datasets from AI Hub, a data-based artificial intelligence industry ecosystem will naturally be formed centered around Gwangju.
Moon Yong-sik, Director of the National Information Society Agency, said, “We will actively strive to ensure that the vast data from the Big Data Platform and AI Hub, which the National Information Society Agency is building, can be easily utilized at the Gwangju AI Data Center so that the Gwangju Metropolitan City’s AI business foundation project can be successfully promoted.” He added, “We will cooperate with Gwangju City to contribute to the revitalization of the data economy and the development of the artificial intelligence industry.”
Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, “If the vast data operation and utilization technologies secured by the National Information Society Agency are combined with Gwangju’s artificial intelligence industry, the nation’s AI competitiveness will be greatly enhanced.” He added, “Since the government also has a strong will for the ‘Data Collection and Utilization Foundation Construction Project’ under the ‘Korean New Deal’ policy, we expect that our city and the Agency will be able to cooperate and coexist in various fields in the future.”
