View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Sharon] The official memorial ceremony for the 11th anniversary of the passing of President Roh Moo-hyun was solemnly held at 11 a.m. on May 23 (Saturday) at the Presidential Tomb in Bongha Village, Jinyeong-eup, Gimhae-si, Gyeongnam.
The memorial ceremony was conducted in a calm atmosphere with the attendance of about 800 mourners, including the bereaved family led by Mrs. Kwon Yang-sook, members of the National Assembly, political parties, government and local government heads, key figures of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, and various other dignitaries.
Hosted by announcer Park Hye-jin, the ceremony proceeded with the national anthem, floral tributes and incense offerings by the bereaved family, a memorial address by Representative Lee Hae-chan, a special video screening for the 11th anniversary, a thank-you speech by Chairman Yoo Si-min, a special video screening of the citizen-participation Sangnoksoo choir, and a visit to pay respects.
Lee Hae-chan, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said in his memorial address, "When we held the tearful funeral in the spring of 2009 when President Roh Moo-hyun passed away, I vowed to carry on the President’s will, enduring anger, sorrow, and tears, and to move forward step by step." He added, "Now, the awakened citizens and organized power that the President spoke of have opened the post-Roh Moo-hyun era without Roh Moo-hyun."
Yoo Si-min, chairman of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, expressed gratitude, saying, "On the eleventh May since the President’s departure, ‘a humble person, humble power, and a strong nation’ have come very close to us." He continued, "During his lifetime, President Roh Moo-hyun was a river that never gave up going to the sea, and now he has become a sea that accepts any river. We look forward to a tomorrow where everyone becomes one in the sea called the Republic of Korea."
The memorial ceremony was broadcast live through the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation website and YouTube.
