Won Yu-cheol's Term Not Extended... Korean Party "Merger Resolution by 29th" (Comprehensive)
Party Leadership, 21st Elected Members and 20th Incumbent Lawmakers Hold Series of Meetings, Decide
To Cancel the 26th Party Convention... "Merger by the 29th"
[Asia Economy Reporters Kim Hyemin and Im Chunhan] The Future Korea Party, which had internal conflicts over the timing of the merger with the United Future Party, has reached a final decision to complete the merger before the opening of the 21st National Assembly.
On the morning of the 22nd, party leader Won Yoo-chul and other party executives held a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly and confirmed the resolution to complete the merger by May 29. The party convention scheduled for the 26th to extend Won's term was canceled. Instead, the meeting on that day was converted into a final wrap-up session with incumbent lawmakers, 21st National Assembly elected members, and key party officials.
After the Supreme Council meeting, Leader Won told reporters, "We plan to pass the merger resolution by the 29th," adding, "I hope it can be done quickly. I wonder if it is necessary to drag it out until the 29th," showing a progressive stance. Previously, Won had pushed for a term extension, saying it was physically difficult to complete the merger within this month.
Won's term will end on the 29th as per the party's constitution and regulations. Regarding his changed position, he said, "At the United Future Party's lawmakers' meeting, the elected members resolved to merge by the 29th. I respect that," and added, "This morning, the Future Korea Party elected members also entrusted the party leader and leadership, but they proposed that it would be good to complete the merger by the 29th, and the Supreme Council resolved by incorporating all of this."
Earlier, the Future Korea Party elected members agreed on the opinion to complete the merger procedure by the 29th. Party secretariat officials have been refusing party duties since the day before in opposition to Won's term extension.
