Singapore Approaches 30,000 Cumulative COVID-19 Cases... 91% Are Migrant Workers
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] The cumulative number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Singapore is approaching 30,000.
According to local media on the 21st, the Singapore Ministry of Health announced that 448 additional people tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total confirmed cases to 29,812.
The majority of the new confirmed cases are migrant workers living in dormitories, and the Ministry of Health explained that 13 of the confirmed cases are Singapore citizens and permanent residents. Considering that the number of new confirmed cases has been between 400 and 500 over the past three days, it is expected that the cumulative confirmed cases will exceed 30,000 on the 22nd.
Singaporean experts had already predicted that the cumulative confirmed cases would reach between 30,000 and 40,000 within this month.
Earlier, on the 19th, the Singapore government announced that as local infection cases are decreasing and the confirmed cases among 'dormitory migrant workers' are stabilizing, the COVID-19 suppression measure called the 'Circuit Breaker,' which includes workplace closures and remote learning, will end as scheduled on the 1st of next month. According to the Ministry of Health, the number of discharged patients over the past eight days exceeded the number of new confirmed cases. Additionally, local infection confirmed cases excluding 'dormitory migrant workers' have decreased compared to two weeks ago.
As of this day, among the 323,000 migrant workers living communally in dormitories, about 8.4%, or 27,106 people, have tested positive for COVID-19. This accounts for approximately 91% of the total cumulative confirmed cases in Singapore.
