Gwangju City, together with Gwangju Jumeokbap vendors, Gwangju Design Promotion Agency, and the Central Association of Food Service Industry Gwangju Branch, delivered 1,036 Gwangju Jumeokbap (518 each) and 10,000 masks (5,000 each) at the taxi stands in Youth Square in Gwangcheon-dong and in front of Gwangju Songjeong Station, where many taxi drivers gather, promoting the Jumeokbap.
May 20 is the day in 1980 when taxi drivers, enraged by the atrocities of the martial law troops, protested by honking their horns and flashing their headlights, instilling a strong sense of solidarity and boosting the morale of the citizens.
This sharing event was organized to honor the noble spirit of the taxi drivers who participated in the vehicle protest at that time and to comfort taxi workers who are struggling due to a sharp decline in passengers caused by COVID-19.
Mayor Lee Yong-seop also personally delivered Jumeokbap at Youth Square on the day, listening to the difficulties of taxi drivers and offering words of encouragement.
