41% of US Consumers Say They Will Not Buy Products "Made in China"
Growing Distrust After COVID-19 Spread Blame
35% of Chinese Consumers Also Won't Buy American Products
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Young-shin] A big data survey revealed that 41% of Americans said they would not purchase "Made in China" products.
Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) cited a recent survey by the German Deutsche Bank big data platform (dbDIG) and reported on the 20th (local time) that there is strong antipathy toward Chinese products in the United States. SCMP also added that 35% of Chinese people said they would not buy "Made in USA" products.
SCMP explained that this result came as tensions between the U.S. and China deepened over responsibility for the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). SCMP analyzed that as U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly raised the issue of China's responsibility for COVID-19 and questioned China's credibility, American distrust of Chinese products increased.
SCMP reported that a backlash against the U.S. blaming China has caused Chinese people to distrust American products as well. SCMP noted that with less than six months remaining until the U.S. presidential election, American politicians are likely to use the COVID-19 situation for election purposes.
SCMP also shared a consumer survey by FTI, a U.S. consulting firm, which found that Americans are willing to pay additional costs incurred from relocating production lines from China. In this survey, 78% of Americans said they would pay extra costs associated with moving production lines. China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 and has served as the "world's factory." American consumers have so far purchased Chinese products made with cheap labor.
Additionally, 55% of the surveyed Americans responded that China would not fulfill the Phase One U.S.-China trade agreement signed in January.
