This Year’s Garlic Production Expected to Increase... Chungnam Takes Proactive Measures for Supply Stability
[Asia Economy (Naepo) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province is taking preemptive measures to stabilize supply and demand in anticipation of an increase in garlic production this year.
According to the province on the 20th, the garlic cultivation area this year is 2,810 hectares, which is 33 hectares (1.2%) more than the average 2,777 hectares.
With the increase in cultivation area, production is also expected to rise. The province predicts a total garlic production of 40,000 tons this year. This is 4,000 tons (11.1%) more than the average 36,000 tons.
The problem is that the increase in garlic production may cause garlic farm gate prices to fall, potentially harming farmers.
Accordingly, the province plans to proactively implement supply and demand stabilization measures to minimize damage to garlic farmers.
Through the vegetable price stabilization system and emergency price stabilization projects, shipments of about 19,000 tons of garlic from 146 hectares will be restricted or discarded, and during the harvest season, 21,000 tons of garlic will be purchased and stored by the government to isolate it from the market.
