The Secret Behind the Color of 'LG Velvet' Changing with Light and Angle
Velvet Design Team Talks About 'LG Velvet'
Optical Pattern and Nano Lamination Technology Realize Aurora Colors
On the 19th, LG Electronics held an online tech seminar on the design and rear color processing technique of the LG Velvet. It achieves a subtle color by using a special film made by stacking hundreds of layers of optical patterns of microscopic size invisible to the human eye and nano materials.
On the 19th, LG Electronics held an LG Velvet online tech seminar to reveal behind-the-scenes stories about the design and rear color development. The LG Velvet applies a new color process that makes it appear as different colors depending on the angle, light, and illumination. LG Electronics explained, "The secret of the subtle LG Velvet color is the 'optical pattern' that expresses color more deeply and three-dimensionally, and the 'nano lamination' technology that refracts light."
On the back of the smartphone, there is a delicate pattern invisible to the human eye. LG Electronics engraved an optical pattern under the Velvet rear glass at intervals of less than 1 micrometer (about 1/100th the thickness of a hair). The densely engraved pattern of microscopic size expresses the Velvet’s color with a three-dimensional effect. LG Electronics’ production technology institute utilized independently designed optical pattern technology, which takes more than 10 times longer processing time compared to the previous model.
In the case of Illusion Sunset, red and gold colors blend like a sunset, making it difficult to pinpoint a single color. The subtle color is realized by a special film made with 'nano lamination' technology that stacks hundreds of layers of nano materials that refract light. The nano materials reflect light at different angles to express various colors.
The LG Velvet has a large 6.8-inch screen but features a slim design with a wide surface area that contacts the hand, allowing it to be held with one hand. It is the first product to apply a 3D arc design with curved front and rear sides. The 3D arc design is designed so that the curvature (degree of bending) becomes gentler toward the center of the smartphone. The curvature changes from 6.5R, 10R, 15R, to 18R from both ends of the product.
