Jeju Reports First Wild Tick SFTS Patient This Year (Update)
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] A patient infected with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) after being bitten by a wild tick has been reported in Jeju.
According to Jeju Province on the 18th, A (84), who lives in Seogwipo City, showed symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, and chills, and was confirmed to have SFTS after testing. This is the first confirmed SFTS case in Jeju this year and the sixth nationwide.
Health authorities believe that A was infected after being bitten by a tick while working in an orchard.
SFTS is an infectious disease that usually occurs from April to November when bitten by a tick carrying the SFTS virus (mainly Haemaphysalis longicornis), showing symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased platelets.

The first SFTS patient was reported in Jeju in 2013, and as of this date, a total of 76 people have been infected with SFTS. Among them, 12 people died, including 4 in 2013, 1 in 2015, 3 in 2017, 3 in 2018, and 1 in 2019.
