Establishment of Dedicated Teams for Applying Advanced Technologies by Construction Type such as Civil Engineering and Architecture
Five Smart Construction Innovation Sites Selected for Bridges, Roads, Tunnels, and Buildings... Pilot Application
"Expecting Construction Paradigm Shift through Productivity and Quality Improvement, Execution System and Work Environment Changes"

"Full-Scale Smart Construction" Hyundai Construction Establishes Dedicated Team and Selects Innovative Sites View original image

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on the 18th that it recently established a dedicated organization to build a smart construction environment and selected innovative sites to pilot its application.

The innovative sites include a total of five locations: three civil engineering sites such as the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway and two architectural sites including the National Information Resources Service Daegu Center. At the pilot innovative sites, smart construction technologies that were previously applied individually will be integrated to establish a standard system. Hyundai Engineering & Construction plans to expand this approach to all sites based on this.

For civil engineering, three innovative sites were selected under the themes of ▲Smart Bridge ▲Smart Road ▲Smart Tunnel. For Smart Bridge, the construction site of the bridge between Anseong and Guri, Section 14 of the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway, was selected as an innovative site. The plan is to realize the world's longest concrete cable-stayed bridge by applying ultra-high-strength concrete, stay cables, prestressing strands, and Building Information Modeling (BIM). To simplify real-time analysis at each construction stage and surveying tasks, a concrete strength prediction system and a high-precision GPS measurement system will be applied. Joint research on digital drawings, CDE (Common Data Environment), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) will be conducted with the Korea Expressway Corporation’s Long-span Bridge Project Team.

For Smart Road, the 'Hankook Tire Driving Test Track Construction Project' was selected as an innovative site. The plan is to improve efficiency in surveying and progress management by utilizing drones and laser scanning, and to increase productivity by applying a system that can precisely control construction machinery. For Smart Tunnel, the 'Expressway No. 400 Gimpo-Paju Construction Project (Section 2)' was selected as an innovative site, where a safety management system will be applied to prevent blind spots on site and monitor workers’ real-time movements.

For architecture, the National Information Resources Service Daegu Center and Coupang Logistics Center were selected as smart construction innovative sites. About 20 smart construction technologies will be integrated and demonstrated to maximize effectiveness and rapidly spread to all sites. In particular, BIM technology, which has so far been used only when requested by clients or when technically necessary, will be uniformly applied to all architectural and housing sites starting this year to accelerate the spread of smart construction. By utilizing BIM simulation, potential risks before construction will be identified, and completed structures will be scanned with drones and laser scanners to acquire 3D data, which will be compared with BIM models to realize ultra-precision construction. Major construction materials will be tracked in real time through a self-developed smart logistics management system, accurately confirming production, transportation, delivery, and installation status, and sharing information with responsible personnel.

A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official said, "Improvements in productivity and quality through smart construction technology, changes in execution systems through digital transformation, and changes in the work environment through BIM will bring about a major paradigm shift in the construction industry," adding, "We will continue to lead new paradigm changes in the future."
