20s Mother Sentenced to Prison for Neglecting Infant with Rare Disease Leading to Death
[Asia Economy Kim Yeon-ju, Intern Reporter] A woman in her 20s was sentenced to prison for neglecting her infant suffering from a rare disease, resulting in the child's death.
The Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 12 (Presiding Judge Lee Chang-kyung) announced on the 18th that A (23), who was charged with abandonment resulting in death, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison and was taken into custody in court.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "It appears that the baby, whose father is unknown, ended a short life in extreme pain. Although the defendant claimed to have put the baby to sleep and gone out due to stress, it led to an irreversible outcome. We considered the defendant's deep remorse and the requests for leniency from people around her."
A was charged last year for leaving her 7-month-old child alone for about 11 hours at her parents' house, resulting in the child's death.
The infant victim, who suffered from a congenital rare disease, reportedly needed constant monitoring by a caregiver due to apnea symptoms.
