Pope Francis: "May the Sacrifice of the 5·18 Youth Who Fought for Human Rights Be Remembered"

Archbishop Xuereb attended the 40th anniversary memorial mass for the May 18 Democratic Uprising held on the 17th at Imdong Cathedral, the diocesan cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Gwangju, and stated, "The Pope was pleased to hear about the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of May 18, which occurred in 1980, and especially prayed that the sacrifices of the young people who gave their lives to protect human rights would be remembered."
Through his message, Pope Francis emphasized that the Church in Gwangju must continue to play a role and make efforts in forming social order by respecting individual dignity and rights, and protecting life.
