Jeonnam Provincial Office Attends 40th Anniversary Ceremony of the May 18 Democratic Uprising on the 15th
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Lee Yong-jae, Chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, announced on the 16th that he attended the 40th anniversary ceremony of the May 18 Democratic Uprising on the 15th, comforting the democratic merit recipients and bereaved families and honoring the noble spirit of May.
In his memorial address that day, Chairman Lee stated, “I am very pleased that the commemorative ceremony to protect Jeonnam's precious history and the noble spirit of May was held at the Jeonnam Provincial Office on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising,” and expressed, “I offer my gratitude and respect to the bereaved families and members of May organizations who have overcome years of suffering and inherited the spirit of May.”
He continued, “May is the day when the people fiercely resisted the military dictatorship’s guns and swords to protect democracy and human rights, creating the history of the people,” emphasizing, “It is because of the noble sacrifices of the people and the spirit of May 18 that today’s Republic of Korea and today’s Jeollanam-do exist.”
He also said, “Today is not only significant as the 40th anniversary but also a special day when the old Jeonnam Provincial Office nameplate, which witnessed the May 18 tragedy, was brought out into the world,” adding, “Even now, 40 years later, the nameplate with clear bullet marks connects the old Jeonnam Provincial Office and the current Jeonnam Provincial Office, serving as valuable material for our descendants to reflect on the value of democracy.”
