"Full Support for Digital Twin to Predict Emergency Disasters in Multiple Facilities in Advance"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Starting this year, digital twin technology will be utilized in multi-use facilities such as Changwon NC Park to remotely manage sites in real time and predict fires, emergencies, and other disasters in advance. In the event of an accident, the situation can be shared in real time with disaster authorities to minimize damage.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 14th that as part of the 5G+ Strategy (Public Leading Investment), it has selected two new projects under the '5G-based Digital Twin Public Leading Project' and will begin full support. Digital twin technology refers to technology that implements an organic linkage by utilizing new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, Internet of Things, and 3D modeling to create a virtual space identical to the real environment.
This year, the government will newly promote the project to support the creation of an initial 5G market and foster a private-led intelligent information service industry by proactively applying new technologies such as 5G and digital twin to public facilities owned by government agencies and local governments, as well as industrial facilities of companies.
The Ministry of Science and ICT has finally selected two consortia from Gyeongnam and Gwangju (totaling 9.5 billion KRW) that showed strong willingness to participate in the 5G-based digital twin public leading project through an open competition.
First, the Gyeongnam Technopark consortium plans to provide 5G specialized services such as building safety monitoring, disaster control, simulation-based services, advanced security, and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) for 27 facilities including NC Park, Masan Medical Center, and facilities in Gyeongsangnam-do, Changwon City, and Gimhae City. The Gwangju Metropolitan City consortium plans to secure continuity and scalability of the project by establishing a high-efficiency, low-cost facility sensing environment and implementing user-customized intelligent services for 25 public-private-military facilities involving the Yeonghonam Moonlight Alliance (a consultative body between Daegu Dalgubeol and Gwangju Bitgoeul) and the Korea Military Academy.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to invest a total of 30 billion KRW from this year through 2022 to achieve digital government innovation as well as private sector innovative growth. The digital twin market size is expected to grow from 3.8 billion USD last year to 35.8 billion USD by 2025.

Park Yoon-gyu, Director of Information and Communication Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “We will contribute to ensuring the safety of the people by establishing a digital non-face-to-face market base through ICT convergence technologies such as 5G and digital twin, and securing a real-time safety management system. Since 5G-based digital twin cases are rare worldwide, we will actively strive to lead to securing industrial competitiveness.”
