This initiative aims to support farmers who have been hit hard as local festivals have been canceled one after another due to the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Hyundai Department Store announced on the 14th that from the 15th to the 31st, it will hold a special discount event called ‘Together with Hyundai Food Hall’ featuring regional specialties at the food halls of 11 stores in the Gyeongin area, including the Apgujeong Main Store.
During the event period, in collaboration with local governments such as Sancheong County Office, Seongju County Office, Inje County Office, and Chungnam Provincial Office, regional specialties such as Korean beef (Sancheong), oriental melons (Seongju), dried pollack (Inje), and dried seafood (Chungnam) will be sold at discounts of up to 40% compared to the original prices. The prepared quantity is worth approximately 1 billion KRW.
From the 22nd to the 28th, at 11 stores in the Gyeongin area, Hyundai Department Store will work with Sancheong County Office to offer Jirisan Sancheong organic Korean beef, Jirisan black pork, Jirisan dried persimmons, and other meat and regional specialties from Sancheong at discounts of 30-40% off the regular prices. Customers who purchase these products will receive 100g of Sancheong mulberry salt on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to the limited number of Sancheong organic Korean beef cattle, large-scale discount events have not been held before. This time, after three months of consultation with Sancheong County Office, sufficient quantities were secured, and direct purchasing allowed for higher discount rates.
Additionally, at Sinchon Store and Kintex Store (from the 15th to the 19th), and Pangyo Store and Jungdong Store (from the 22nd to the 26th), Hyundai Department Store will hold the ‘Seongju Honey Oriental Melon Roadshow’ in collaboration with Seongju County Office (Seongju Oriental Melon Convergence Business Group), offering Seongju oriental melons at discounts of up to 32% off the original prices. Representative products include pick-your-own Seongju oriental melons, dried Seongju oriental melons, and Seongju oriental melon syrup.
At the Trade Center Store (from the 15th to the 23rd) and Apgujeong Main Store (from the 23rd to the 25th), Hyundai Department Store will hold the ‘Yongdaeri Soul Market’ with Inje County Office. Yongdaeri, located in Buk-myeon, Inje County, is famous for dried pollack. This event will feature regional specialties such as dried pollack strips, seasoned grilled dried pollack, dried pollack ramen, and dried pollack with hamcho salt.
Cheonho Store will hold the ‘Taste of the Sea Boshu’ event from the 22nd to the 28th in collaboration with Chungnam Provincial Office, selling processed seafood products such as dried seafood, salted seafood, and seaweed at prices 20-30% lower than usual. Representative products include pen shell scallops and sea squirt salted seafood.
Hyundai Department Store is also partnering with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to hold the ‘Korea Seafood Grand Exhibition.’ From the 15th to the 31st, at the food halls of 11 stores in the Gyeongin area, about 10 types of domestic seafood such as eel, red sea bream, and rockfish will be sold at discounts of up to 30%. During the event, freshwater eel from Gochang will be sold at 12,000 KRW per fish, a 30% discount, and domestic red sea bream and rockfish will also be offered at prices 30% lower than usual. Popular domestic seafood such as hairtail, croaker, and blue crab will be sold at 20-30% discounts compared to regular prices.
Yoon Sang-kyung, head of the Fresh Food Team at Hyundai Department Store, said, “We hope this event, conducted in consultation with local governments, will provide practical help to farmers and fishermen who have suffered significant sales losses due to the cancellation of local festivals or blocked sales channels. We plan to continue various efforts to promote the consumption of domestic agricultural, fishery, and livestock products in the future.”
