US Extends Huawei Sanctions... Trump Amplifies Anti-China Sentiment
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the executive order blocking the sale of Chinese telecommunications equipment, including Huawei, in the United States until next year. As he continues to criticize China, his anti-China policies are relentlessly expanding into information and communications, trade, and finance.
On the 13th (local time), U.S. media reported that President Trump extended the executive order for another year, which prohibits American companies from using telecommunications equipment manufactured by companies that pose national security risks.
Bloomberg News reported, "President Trump renewed the national emergency order restricting Huawei and ZTE from selling equipment in the U.S. for one year," adding that this move will continue the battle with China over dominance in 5G (fifth-generation) technology networks.
The executive order on "Securing the Information and Communications Technology and Services Supply Chain," which took effect on May 15 last year amid the U.S.-China trade war, targeted Chinese telecommunications equipment companies including Huawei and ZTE.
President Trump also continued his criticism of China on this day. In a tweet, he said, "Dealing with China is a very costly thing," adding, "We have just made a tremendous trade deal and the ink is barely dry. The world has been hit by a plague from China." He further stated, "One hundred trade deals could not make up the difference. And all those innocent lives were lost."
Earlier, at a press conference on the 11th, regarding concerns that renegotiations of the trade agreement were spreading within China amid escalating U.S.-China tensions, he dismissed them by saying, "I have no interest at all."
President Trump has also extended the responsibility for COVID-19 to the financial markets by ordering the blocking of Chinese stock investments in the U.S. federal retirement pension funds.
