Gwangju City Introduces Six 'Extra-Large Low-Floor Buses' with Three Doors
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 13th that it will pilot six ultra-large low-floor buses with three doors on routes experiencing severe congestion inside city buses starting in September to improve convenience for city bus users.
The 3-door low-floor bus is 12 meters long, 1.1 meters longer than the existing low-floor buses, and among the three doors, two are used as exit doors, allowing it to carry more than 90 passengers (standing capacity), about 30 more than a regular city bus, at one time.
Additionally, like regular low-floor buses, it applies a kneeling system that tilts the bus 7-8 cm towards the boarding side without stairs when stopping, and a ramp, enabling elderly and disabled passengers in wheelchairs to board and alight conveniently. Each bus can accommodate up to two wheelchairs and four strollers.
These ultra-large buses are currently operating in Busan, Daejeon, Gimpo, and Seongnam, and the price per bus is approximately 290 million KRW, about 80 million KRW more expensive than a regular city bus.
Gwangju plans to select three overcrowded routes based on congestion levels and complaints and start operating the buses on those routes.

Son Doo-young, head of the city's public transportation department, said, "With increased passenger capacity and more doors, we expect to reduce the inconvenience caused by overcrowded buses during rush hours."
