On the 12th, the city announced that it chose the Daejeon Station area and Yeonchuk District as innovation city sites, reflecting the revitalization of the old downtown, balanced east-west development, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s guidelines for selecting innovation city locations, and the results of research projects.
The selection of innovation city sites is a preliminary procedure to apply to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for designation as planned development districts for innovation cities, in line with the amendment to the Special Act on Balanced National Development, which will take effect on July 8.
The city plans to attract public institutions related to small and medium enterprises, transportation, and knowledge industries to the Daejeon Station area to create related clusters, enhance the urban competitiveness of the old downtown area, and establish a new successful innovation city model.
Additionally, the strategy for Yeonchuk District is to attract public institutions related to science and technology, form related clusters, and use this as a foundation to drive regional growth.
In particular, the city plans to develop Yeonchuk District as a hub for innovative growth by establishing a metropolitan administrative complex, including relocating the Daedeok District Office, and linking it with the adjacent International Science Business Belt and Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone.
Before announcing the selection of the innovation city sites, ‘Daejeon Station area and Yeonchuk District,’ Mayor Heo Tae-jung of Daejeon met with the heads of the five districts to explain the selection process of the candidate sites and held a meeting to request understanding and cooperation from the autonomous districts for the creation of the innovation city.
