The Republic of Korea Civil Servant Award is given to civil servants who have demonstrated outstanding achievements through dedication to the public and proactive work performance, and has been promoted since 2014. This year, a total of 80 recipients were selected, including those awarded the Order of Service Merit, the Order of Civil Merit, the Presidential Citation, and the Prime Minister's Citation.
Officer Chae, who received the Green Stripes Order of Service Merit, the second highest honor among this year's awards, has served onboard the national fisheries patrol vessels for 27 years. Since 2014, he has worked as a captain, guiding safe fishing operations and cracking down on illegal Chinese fishing vessels, contributing to the protection of marine resources and the establishment of fishing order. A Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries official stated, "In particular, last year, he led efforts to expel about 260 Chinese fishing vessels that appeared en masse in the East Sea, defending the East Sea Exclusive Economic Zone, and despite severe weather, he supported emergency transport to rescue fishermen whose lives were in danger due to injuries sustained during fishing operations. He also devoted himself to providing medical and welfare support to fishermen on remote islands and isolated islets."
