Dr. Imjin Appointed as Director of SGI at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Im Jinjeon (48), former Head of the Macroeconomic Research Department at the Korea Institute of Finance, has been appointed as the 2nd Director of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Sustainable Growth Initiative (SGI).
The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced on the 10th that Im was appointed as the new director following the appointment of the 1st Director Seo Youngkyung as a member of the Financial Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Korea.
Director Im graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Economics and earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a macroeconomic expert who worked at the Bank of Korea for 15 years, serving in the Research Department and the Economic Research Institute. Since 2012, he has held positions such as Head of the Macroeconomic Research Department, Director of the Financial System Risk Center, and Director of the Household Debt Research Center at the Korea Institute of Finance.
Director Im emphasized, “Our economy is currently facing a significant turning point due to demographic changes, advancement of the digital economy, and restructuring of global supply chains. The KCCI SGI aims to become a leading private comprehensive research institution in Korea by presenting rational and concrete measures for the sustainable growth of the Korean economy.”
Along with the inauguration of the new director, SGI also presented the key initiatives (strategic research projects) it will focus on this year. To create a virtuous cycle among growth, jobs, and welfare and to promote sustainable growth, the initiatives for this year were set from a holistic perspective.
In 2020, SGI's main initiatives included △macroeconomic policies responding to COVID-19 △mid- to long-term national debt management and tax and fiscal policies △mitigation of household debt risks △job creation measures in the digital era. In the short term, SGI plans to focus on research for overcoming the COVID-19 crisis, while in the mid- to long-term, it will pay attention to changes in the global economic and industrial environment and study corporate response strategies for the ‘post-COVID era.’

The KCCI Sustainable Growth Initiative, established in 2018 as a private think tank, diagnoses economic conditions with balance to help companies have a correct understanding of the situation and proposes practical alternatives for future growth.
