[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the City Council have launched emergency support for corporate taxi drivers who are struggling due to decreased income caused by COVID-19.
Councilor Gwangho Lee announced at the 294th Seoul City Council extraordinary session that the second supplementary budget of Seoul Metropolitan Government, including 7.44 billion KRW for emergency management improvement funds for corporate taxi companies affected by COVID-19, has been approved.
The emergency management improvement fund support project for corporate taxi companies (hereinafter referred to as emergency living expenses) is a program that provides 300,000 KRW per corporate taxi driver among 255 corporate taxi drivers in Seoul to improve the management of corporate taxis suffering from a sharp decline in income and turnover of drivers due to COVID-19.
As of the end of April, the actual number of corporate taxi drivers in Seoul was 24,680, a decrease of 5,242 drivers (?17.5%) compared to the end of the previous year (29,922 drivers).
Also, the average daily operating revenue decreased by 1.311 billion KRW (?31%) from 4.235 billion KRW in the previous year to 2.924 billion KRW (based on March to April).
The city plans to accept support applications from corporate taxi companies and start providing emergency living expenses in cash as early as the end of May. The recipients of the emergency living expenses are 24,680 drivers who have continuously worked at corporate taxis located in Seoul since before March 1 of this year; those who have resigned midway are excluded.
