Gwangju City Transfers 5·18 Truth Investigation Tip Submissions to Investigation Committee

View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City and the 5·18 Memorial Foundation have transferred 210 tips received nationwide since 2017 for the investigation of the May 18 Incident to the 5·18 Truth Investigation Committee (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Investigation Committee’).
On the 7th, Gwangju Metropolitan City held a transfer ceremony for the reports and tips received at the 5·18 Truth Investigation Integrated Reporting Center in the City Hall Business Room. Kim Jong-hyo, Deputy Mayor, and Lee Cheol-woo, Chairman of the 5·18 Memorial Foundation, handed over the details of the truth investigation tips received by each organization to Song Seon-tae, Chairman of the 5·18 Truth Investigation Committee, the same day, the city announced.
The tips include 13 cases related to missing persons, 48 cases related to secret burials, 37 cases related to helicopter shootings and gunfire, 8 cases related to violent suppression, 6 cases related to sexual violence, and 98 other cases. The Investigation Committee plans to use these as basic data for future truth investigation.
On this day, Deputy Mayor Kim Jong-hyo said, “It is our duty to properly convey the meaning and historical value of Gwangju to future generations through a complete truth investigation,” and added, “Gwangju City will actively support the Investigation Committee to ensure smooth activities.”
Chairman Song Seon-tae said, “Conscientious testimonies confessing the truth are important clues to uncovering the historical truth of the May 18 Democratic Movement,” and “Through the investigation of the May 18 truth, we will heal the pain of past history and contribute to national reconciliation and unity.”

Meanwhile, the Investigation Committee was established under the “Special Act on the Investigation of the May 18 Democratic Movement” enacted in March 2018 to investigate human rights violations, violence, massacres, secret burial incidents, and other anti-democratic or anti-human rights acts by state power during the May 18 Democratic Movement.
