Lee Hae-chan Meets Families of Icheon Fire Victims, Promises "Institutional and Legal Measures in Consultation with Government"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Lee Hae-chan, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, met with the bereaved families of the Icheon logistics warehouse fire disaster on the 4th and stated, "We will consult with the government to take institutional and legal measures that can be done."
According to Chief Spokesperson Kang Hoon-sik, Lee visited the joint memorial altar set up at the Seohui Youth Culture Center in Icheon City in the afternoon to pay his respects to the 38 victims of the fire and made these remarks. Those who attended the memorial included Cho Jung-sik, Chairman of the Policy Committee, Park Joo-min, Supreme Council Member, Kim Young-jin, Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee, Kim Sung-hwan, Chief Secretary to the Party Leader, and Assemblyman So Byung-hoon.
The bereaved families pointed out, "Such incidents have repeated in the past, and each time the government apologized, but the same thing happened again." In response, Lee reiterated, "We will consult with the government to ensure that legal matters are supported."
Earlier, Lee inspected the site of the warehouse fire and received an explanation about the cause of the fire from Eom Tae-jun, Mayor of Icheon, and Seo Seung-hyun, Chief of the Icheon Fire Station. Lee expressed his sorrow, saying, "Too many people have lost their lives," and added, "Isn't there too much cost-cutting on construction?"

The fire disaster occurred at around 1:32 p.m. on the 29th of last month at a logistics warehouse under new construction in Moga-myeon, Icheon City. The explosion and subsequent flames spread throughout the entire building, resulting in the deaths of 38 workers and injuries to 10 others.
