A total of 53 earthquakes including a magnitude 3.1 quake in Haenam, Jeonnam... Korea Meteorological Administration begins detailed observation
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] In Haenam, Jeonnam Province, a total of 53 weak earthquakes have occurred over the past 8 days, prompting the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) to launch an investigation.
The KMA announced on the 4th that a magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred in Haenam, Jeonnam, at around 10:07 PM on the 3rd, recording a maximum instrumental intensity of III in the Jeonnam area.
The epicenter of this earthquake was located 21 km northwest of Haenam-gun at 34.66 degrees north latitude and 126.40 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 21 km. Additionally, a total of 14 microearthquakes occurred after the magnitude 3.1 earthquake.
The KMA explained that since instrumental observations began in 1978, no earthquakes had been recorded in this area, but starting with a magnitude 1.8 earthquake at 12:34 PM on the 26th of last month, a total of 53 earthquakes have occurred to date, including 4 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or higher and 49 microearthquakes below magnitude 2.0.
Past cases of consecutive earthquakes in the same region on the Korean Peninsula include 102 earthquakes from April to October 2019 in Baengnyeongdo and 98 earthquakes from June to September 2013 in the Boryeong sea area.
The KMA plans to install a temporary observation network around the epicenter on the 4th to conduct precise monitoring and analysis to investigate the cause of the earthquakes, such as faults, since the Haenam area in Jeonnam Province has not been a region where earthquakes frequently occur.
