Habitual Drunk Driving Ski Association Executive Sentenced to Fine in Appeal Trial
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A fine was imposed on an executive of the Korea Ski Association who was charged with habitual drunk driving.
The Criminal Appeal Division 3 of the Seoul Eastern District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Chun-ho) announced on the 1st that it sentenced executive A of the Korea Ski Association, who was charged with violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving), to a fine of 12 million won, the same as in the first trial.
In July of last year, Mr. A drove about 1 km from Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul to Jamsil Station while in a state of extreme intoxication. At that time, his blood alcohol concentration was 0.231%, which is at the level of license cancellation. The first trial court stated, "Mr. A committed the crime while serving a suspended sentence for fraud," but "considered the fact that he admitted the crime and showed remorse."

The prosecution appealed, arguing that the fine of 12 million won was too light, citing Mr. A's prior record of being fined for drunk driving 19 years ago. However, the court maintained the first trial's judgment, stating, "Even considering the circumstances claimed by the prosecutor as reasons for appeal, the original sentence does not appear to be too light or unfair."
