Xi Jinping Talks with Iranian President by Phone: "Unilateral Sanctions Are Not Acceptable"
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed support for Iran's determination to safeguard its sovereignty during a phone call with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
According to the Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper, People's Daily, on the 28th, President Xi spoke with President Rouhani by phone the previous night, saying, "The Chinese government and people support the Iranian government's response to COVID-19," and added, "China and Iran have shown strong bilateral friendship by standing together and helping each other in the fight against COVID-19. China wishes to provide assistance by strengthening cooperation with Iran in COVID-19 response and sharing relevant experiences."
He further stated, "The international community must strengthen cooperation to overcome this sudden major public health crisis. Unilateral sanctions against Iran hinder Iran's and the international community's efforts to contain COVID-19." He also emphasized, "China supports Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty and dignity."

In response, President Rouhani said, "China's experience with COVID-19 is worth referencing for all countries. We hope to further develop the strategic partnership between the two countries by strengthening cooperation with China in health and other fields," and added, "Unilateral sanctions against Iran should be lifted immediately under the current circumstances. Iran hopes to protect multilateralism and its legitimate rights and interests together with other countries."
