Namdong Power-Taekyung Group, Greenhouse Gas Reduction MOU... "Activation of Carbon Dioxide Industry"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Korea South-East Power and Taekyung Group held a 'Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Low-Carbon Green Industry Development Business Agreement Ceremony' on the 24th at Taekyung Group headquarters in Deungchon-dong, Seoul.
The two companies agreed to establish a cooperative system for the successful promotion of the 12MW-class C2U plant project utilizing power plant exhaust gas and the development of greenhouse gas reduction technologies.
South-East Power expects to revitalize the carbon dioxide industry, which is facing difficulties such as decreased productivity due to a shortage of carbon dioxide (CO2) raw material supply, and further contribute to national greenhouse gas reduction.
The C2U plant is South-East Power's greenhouse gas reduction project brand applying CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilization) technology. It is the first domestic 12MW-class greenhouse gas reduction project that captures, compresses, and liquefies CO2 (12~13%) from coal power plant exhaust gas and sells it as liquid carbon dioxide or dry ice.
The produced liquid carbon dioxide is used for industrial gases and beverages. Dry ice, preferred as a cold chain refrigerant, will be supplied not only for fresh food delivery but also planned for export to Japan. Through this, an annual reduction of 70,000 tons of greenhouse gases is expected.
South-East Power has achieved greenhouse gas reduction uniquely among power generation companies since the implementation of the emissions trading system in 2015 through eco-friendly energy transitions such as biofuel conversion (Yeongdong Units 1 and 2), Seosan solar power (65MW), and promotion of greenhouse gas reduction in traditional markets.

Yu Hyang-yeol, President of South-East Power, stated, "This agreement will be a starting point for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through the development of CCU technology incorporating CO2 processing technology, expansion of renewable energy, and domestic and international greenhouse gas reduction projects."
