President Moon's Approval Rating at 63.7%... Returns to 60% Range After 1 Year and 6 Months [Realmeter]
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] A public opinion poll revealed that President Moon Jae-in's approval rating has risen for six consecutive weeks, surpassing the 60% mark.
According to Realmeter, which conducted the survey commissioned by YTN from the 20th to the 24th, the positive evaluation of President Moon's state affairs management increased by 5.4 percentage points from the previous week's weekly aggregate to 63.7%, announced on the 27th. This marks a six-week consecutive upward trend since the second week of March. Conversely, the negative evaluation dropped by 5.2 percentage points to 32.4%.
President Moon's approval rating entered the 60% range for the first time in one year and six months since the third week of October 2018 (60.4%). It is also the highest since the fourth week of September 2018 (65.3%). The gap between positive and negative evaluations was 31.3 percentage points, exceeding 30 percentage points for the first time since the second week of October 2018 (positive 61.9% · negative 31.4%).
Looking at the details, the positive evaluation among those aged 60 and above rose significantly by 9.8 percentage points (49.4%→59.2%) compared to last week, with a particularly large increase. Among those in their 50s, it rose by 7.8 percentage points (59.3%→67.1%), and among those in their 40s, it increased by 3.8 percentage points (69.7%→73.5%).
By ideological inclination, the conservative group saw a 6.5 percentage point increase (22.9%→29.4%), the moderate group a 5.6 percentage point increase (55.5%→61.1%), and the progressive group a 3.1 percentage point increase (87.1%→90.2%) in positive evaluations.
A Realmeter official analyzed, "The main factors behind the soaring approval rating are the perception that the response to COVID-19 was well handled and the public's hope and expectation for effective recovery after COVID-19. There is a strong expectation that the president will demonstrate strong leadership and lead a well-coordinated normalization in a state akin to wartime."
Regarding party support, the Democratic Party of Korea rose by 5.8 percentage points from the previous week to 52.6%, entering the 50% range for the first time in one year and ten months since the third week of June 2018. Meanwhile, the United Future Party fell by 0.2 percentage points to 28.2%, remaining below 30% for the fourth consecutive week.
The Justice Party recorded 5.2%, down 0.8 percentage points. The Open Democratic Party, which appeared for the first time in this week's party support survey, recorded 3.3%. Additionally, the People's Party recorded 3.1%, and the Minsheng Party recorded 1.2%.
