Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Implements Measures to Reduce Motorcycle Traffic Accident Fatalities
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has decided to implement the 'Measures to Reduce Deaths from Two-Wheeled Vehicle Traffic Accidents' to decrease fatalities involving two-wheeled vehicles.
According to the Ministry on the 27th, the government, along with related agencies such as the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the National Police Agency, jointly established measures to reduce traffic accident fatalities on the 9th of this month, and is promoting improvements in systems, expansion of facilities, guidance, and enforcement.
This is due to the recent surge in delivery food orders and increased operation of delivery two-wheeled vehicles caused by social distancing measures amid the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In fact, as of the 15th of this year, the number of deaths from two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents reached 123, an increase of about 15% compared to the same period last year.
Accordingly, the government has prepared safety measures for two-wheeled vehicles. First, it will strengthen traffic safety management for two-wheeled vehicle delivery workers. Enforcement will be intensified focusing on areas with frequent accidents and habitual traffic violations, including crackdowns on signal violations and crossing the center line to enhance two-wheeled vehicle traffic safety. To this end, starting next month, a public traffic safety reporting group of about 1,000 members will be formed and operated.
The responsibility of two-wheeled vehicle delivery intermediaries will also be strengthened. To enhance protection for workers, a standard contract including prohibitions on unfair trade practices and provisions for renting safety equipment will be prepared.
