Tombs of Sejong and Queen Sohyeon to Open Sequentially from the 16th of Next Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] Yeongneung (英陵), the tomb of King Sejong of Joseon and Queen Sohyeon, will be gradually opened from the 16th of next month. The Cultural Heritage Administration's Royal Tombs and Palaces Headquarters announced on the 24th that some restricted areas of Yeongneung, which had been limited for viewing due to a comprehensive restoration project since 2017, will be reopened after 2 years and 6 months.
Until now, only the burial mound of Sejong Yeongneung had been temporarily accessible. Viewing was restricted from Jeongjagak (丁字閣) to the parking lot. Therefore, to visit Sejong Yeongneung, visitors had to walk about 40 minutes along the 'King's Forest Path' beside the Hongsalmun gate of Hyojong Yeongneung (寧陵). The Royal Tombs and Palaces Headquarters will open the royal road (御路) and Jeongjagak, among other ritual spaces, on the 16th of next month, the day after King Sejong's birthday. On Hangeul Day, October 9, the area around the pond at Hyojong Yeongneung will be opened to the public for the first time. Viewing hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but from June to August, the site closes at 6:30 p.m. Admission is 500 won for adults, and the site is closed on Mondays.

Yeongneung in Yeoju is the farthest from Seoul, except for Jangneung in Yeongwol, the tomb of Danjong. After Queen Sohyeon passed away in 1446, King Sejong established a tomb near Heolleung (獻陵) in Naegok-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, where King Taejong and Queen Wongyeong were buried. King Sejong died in 1450 and was buried to the west of Queen Sohyeon. It was the first double burial tomb in Joseon with two burial chambers beneath the mound. The tomb was relocated to Yeoju because from the reign of King Munjong, Sejong's successor, there were ongoing concerns about the suitability of the original site. Ultimately, King Sejong's grandson, King Yejong, enshrined King Sejong and Queen Sohyeon in Yeoju in 1469, the year following his ascension.
