Two Men Arrested in Busan for Sexual Assault and Filming After Meeting on SNS
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Ju Cheol-in] Amid ongoing public outrage over the 'Nth Room case,' men in their 30s who committed similar crimes in Busan have been arrested.
On the 21st, the Saha Police Station in Busan announced that it had arrested a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on the 17th on charges including violation of the Child Welfare Act.
Mr. A is accused of approaching a teenage girl, Ms. B, on an SNS platform with servers located abroad, meeting her, sexually abusing her, and producing obscene materials.
A police official stated, "We cannot disclose specific details such as the period of the crime to protect the victim."
Earlier, on the 7th of this month, the Busan District Court Western Branch had once dismissed Mr. A’s arrest warrant. The court reportedly dismissed the warrant citing no flight risk and the protection of the defendant’s right to defense.
This decision sparked strong backlash from women's organizations. Forty-six women's groups, including the Busan Sexual Violence Counseling Center, which formed a joint countermeasure committee, criticized the judiciary's complacent attitude toward digital sex crimes.
Lee Jae-hee, director of the Busan Sexual Violence Counseling Center, criticized, "If the suspect is not detained for investigation, evidence may be destroyed or illegal recordings may spread rapidly. While society is enraged over the Nth Room case, the court’s sensitivity to gender equality remains behind the times."
The police conducted supplementary investigations, and after the prosecution re-requested the arrest warrant, it was eventually issued.
