Hyundai Motor Launches Veloster N with DCT... Strengthening High-Performance Lineup
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Hyundai Motor Company launched a new model equipped with an 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT) on the country's first high-performance car, the 'Veloster N,' on the 21st.
Hyundai introduced the '2020 Veloster N,' which improves the product appeal of the existing manual transmission model, and expanded the lineup by adding the new N DCT specification. The N DCT specification realizes the driving pleasure philosophy of the high-performance brand 'N' and the three core high-performance elements: ▲cornering rascal (cornering ability) ▲everyday sports car ▲race track driving ability through various specialized functions.
The dual-clutch transmission is based on a manual transmission, adding a clutch and applying an electric clutch actuator to automate gear shifting. This allows for the convenience of an automatic transmission and the dynamic driving feel of a manual transmission simultaneously. The newly added 8-speed DCT differs from the existing dry dual-clutch transmission in that it uses oil during the clutch operation process to improve lubrication and cooling performance, enabling it to handle engines that produce high torque.
The 2020 Veloster N, with the addition of the N DCT, maximizes the performance of the N-exclusive high-performance gasoline 2.0 turbo engine, which delivers a maximum output of 275 horsepower and a maximum torque of 36.0 kgf·m. It takes 5.6 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill. Hyundai explained that this is 0.5 seconds faster than the manual transmission specification.
The N DCT model adds specialized functions unique to the N DCT on top of the various high-performance technologies applied to the existing manual transmission model. Representative features include ▲'N Power Shift (NPS),' which enhances acceleration feeling during gear shifts ▲'N Track Sense Shift (NTS),' which automatically implements an optimized shift pattern for dynamic driving situations such as track driving or winding roads to deliver maximum performance ▲'N Green Shift (NGS),' which includes an overboost function to temporarily maximize engine and transmission performance for extreme driving for a certain period. Existing features such as the rev-matching function applied to the Veloster N have been optimized for the N DCT.

With the addition of a new model that implements the convenience of an automatic transmission in the Veloster N, customer accessibility to high-performance N models is expected to expand. Despite being sold only with a manual transmission, the Veloster N was recognized for its potential by selling an average of 150 units per month domestically. With the addition of this new specification, Hyundai's strategy to strengthen high-performance cars by expanding the N line across various models is expected to gain further momentum. The price of the new Veloster N starts at 29.44 million KRW, including the new infotainment system with an 8-inch Blue Link navigation and a multimedia package that is highly preferred by customers as standard.
