KOSPI Plunges Over 2% Intraday Amid Kim Jong-un Critical Condition Rumors
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] The KOSPI plunged more than 2% intraday following reports that North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un is in a critical condition after surgery.
As of 11 a.m. that day, the KOSPI fell to 1,841.66, down 2.99% from the previous trading day. After breaking below the 1,900 mark the previous day and starting the day down about 0.6%, the KOSPI climbed back up to around 1,898 intraday but then sharply dropped due to foreign media reports that North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un is in a 'grave danger' following recent surgery.
As of 11:20 a.m., among the top market capitalization stocks, Samsung Electronics traded at 49,150 KRW, down 1.90% from the previous day, and SK Hynix fell 0.85%. LG Chem, Hyundai Motor, and LG Household & Health Care also declined by 0.57%, 3.89%, and 0.95%, respectively.
The KOSDAQ index plunged 2.84% from the previous day to 619.71, falling below the 620 level.
