Gyeonggi-do Rolls Up Sleeves to Support Export of 'Everyday Use Masks'
[Asia Economy (Uijeongbu) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is stepping up support for local textile companies producing general-use masks to explore overseas markets. Currently, export of quarantine masks is prohibited, but general masks can be exported.
General-use masks are being produced by a working group formed by local textile companies in the province, covering processes such as yarn, knitting, dyeing, and sewing. Made with antibacterial textile yarn, these masks have the effect of inhibiting bacterial growth.
The province plans to actively utilize export support organizations such as the Gyeonggi Textile Marketing Center (GTC), Gyeonggi Business Center (GBC), and KOTRA overseas trade offices to strengthen overseas marketing.
GTC operates 3 locations in 2 countries including the United States and China; GBC operates 11 locations in 8 countries including the United States, China, India, Russia, and Iran; and KOTRA overseas trade offices operate 127 locations in 84 countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
The province plans to exhibit general-use mask samples at these organizations and arrange export consultations with overseas buyers based on promotional materials detailing product features, export prices, and delivery times.
Previously, the province conducted promotion and marketing targeting public institutions, small business owners, and companies, achieving the supply of 3.34 million general-use masks to date.
Going forward, the province plans to promote the production of 'fashion masks' with various colors and designs such as black, navy, and white to suit consumer preferences.

Kim Gyu-sik, Director of Economic Planning for the province, said, "Due to the spread of COVID-19, export contracts have been repeatedly postponed or canceled, causing considerable damage to local textile companies. As Gyeonggi Province is the center of Korea's textile industry, with 58% of the nation's knitwear companies concentrated here, we will actively support export channels by establishing a mask production system using antibacterial yarn."
