Lee Jae-myung "Considering Disaster Relief Payments for Marriage Immigrants and Permanent Residents"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, announced that he will consider a plan to provide disaster basic income to marriage immigrants and permanent residents among foreigners.
On the 15th, through social media (SNS), Governor Lee said, "We are actively considering a plan to provide (Gyeonggi Province-type disaster basic income) to marriage immigrants and permanent residents," adding, "Speed is more important than details, so there were parts we could not consider deeply."
Earlier, on the 24th of last month, Gyeonggi Province announced a plan to provide 100,000 won of disaster basic income to 13.27 million residents, excluding foreigners from the payment target.
However, migrant human rights organizations filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission on the 2nd and also submitted petitions to local governments.
They pointed out, "It is discrimination against migrants who pay resident tax, income tax, local tax, etc., and even considering the purpose of emergency livelihood support due to COVID-19, it is a human rights violation," and criticized that "the expression 'payment to all residents' itself is absurd."
A provincial official said, "We are considering a plan to provide the payment as early as next month, but no specific plan has been decided yet."
As of February, the number of marriage immigrants and permanent residents in the province is 48,705 and 60,167, respectively.
