"Increase in Lunch Delivery and Decrease in Dinner Delivery After COVID-19"
Barogo Reports 2.8% Point Increase in Lunch Delivery Share in Q1 Compared to Last Year
Evening Delivery Share Slightly Decreases Year-on-Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), food deliveries during lunchtime have increased, while deliveries in the evening have slightly decreased. On the 14th, Barogo (CEO Lee Taekwon), a startup operating a last-mile logistics IT platform, revealed the results of a survey on the 'change in delivery performance share by time slot' from January to March this year, disclosing these findings.
According to Barogo, the share of deliveries performed during lunchtime, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., accounted for 21.4% of total deliveries in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 2.8 percentage points compared to the same period last year and 3.6 percentage points compared to 2018.
This phenomenon is analyzed to have occurred as the start of elementary, middle, and high schools was postponed and remote work expanded due to COVID-19, leading to an increase in consumers opting for delivered meals for lunch. Additionally, as part of practicing social distancing, many office workers have chosen to have lunch through delivery rather than dining in crowded restaurants, which is also cited as a factor.
On the other hand, the share of deliveries performed during the evening hours (5 p.m. to 8 p.m.) in the first quarter of this year was 44.2%, slightly down from 45.6% in the same period last year. The share of deliveries during late-night hours (9 p.m. to 11 p.m.) also decreased. The share of deliveries during late-night hours, which was 18.5% in the first quarter of last year, dropped by 2.9 percentage points to 15.6% this year.

A Barogo official explained, "With increased time spent at home due to social distancing, postponed school openings, and remote work, people tend to have lunch with delivered food while preparing dinner or late-night snacks themselves, which appears to have influenced the share of deliveries by time slot." Meanwhile, the number of deliveries performed by Barogo in the first quarter of this year reached 21,029,000, showing a 93.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
