Yang Hyang-ja, the Democratic Party candidate running in Gwangju Seo-gu Eul for the April 15 general election, said in an interview with Asia Economy on the 7th, “When President Moon recruited me, it was because of Honam, business, and women,” adding, “I have devoted my entire body for four years to regain Honam’s support. Who else can talk about the economy?”
As her election pledge, Yang proposed the establishment of a ‘Future Car One-Stop Cluster’ that covers everything from R&D to complete vehicle manufacturing. Yang explained, “Ultimately, we must revive Kia Motors and the Gwangju-type jobs,” adding, “To do that, we inevitably have to become an advanced base for future automobiles.”
Regarding the election situation, Yang expressed confidence, saying, “(The residents) say this time it’s really the Democratic Party, it’s Yang Hyang-ja,” and “(The gap in support rates) will widen more and more as time goes by.” Gwangju Seo-gu Eul is a district where Yang and Cheon Jeong-bae of the Minsheng Party are having a rematch. In the 20th general election, Cheon won 54.52% of the vote, defeating Yang, who received 31.48%, securing his sixth term.
Recent polls show Yang leading Cheon by a large margin. According to a poll conducted on April 4 by TV Chosun, commissioned to Matrix Research, surveying 500 men and women aged 18 and over residing in Gwangju Seo-gu Eul (response rate 24%, margin of error ±4.4 percentage points at a 95% confidence level), Yang received 63.2%, while Cheon received 20.4%.
