On the 8th, the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office requested the court to sentence the mother A (24) and accomplice B (23, female), who were arrested and indicted for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes (child abuse resulting in death), to 20 years in prison at the sentencing trial held at the 13th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court (Presiding Judge Ko Eunseol). They also requested a 15-year prison sentence for A’s cohabiting partner C (33).
The prosecution explained, "This was not a momentary or impulsive act, but a continuous abuse over three weeks while the child, who was unable to resist, suffered in pain," adding, "They even recorded and shared videos of the child suffering and being punished, showing a reckless attitude toward the child's life."
They continued, "After the crime, they falsely reported and concealed the place and cause of death," and stated the reason for the sentencing request: "They abused the child for a long time despite the child suffering in pain and attempted to cover up the crime, showing a very bad nature of the offense."
A and others pleaded for leniency, citing the difficult circumstances they lived in and their deep remorse.
A’s defense attorney appealed, "She has a level 3 intellectual disability with an IQ equivalent to that of a 7-year-old," and asked the court to consider that "she was abandoned by her family, gave birth and raised the child alone in a single mother’s facility, and committed the crime without receiving social care."
B’s side stated, "She is scheduled to give birth in June and was living in hardship as a basic livelihood security recipient before committing the crime," and requested "the maximum leniency."
C’s side said, "He grew up in difficult circumstances and did not receive proper care," and asked for leniency considering that "his grandmother is elderly and his father has mobility difficulties."
The prosecution submitted the autopsy results of the deceased D (3) to the court that day. The autopsy revealed that D died from multiple injuries to the body and fractured ribs.
The sentencing trial for these individuals is scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. on the 1st of next month in courtroom 317 of the Incheon District Court.
A and B are accused of beating A’s daughter D to death every day from October 27 to November 14 last year at a villa in Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do.
C is also accused of participating in the crimes with A and B during the same period, repeatedly beating D and causing her death.
Investigations revealed that for 19 days, they neither entrusted D to daycare or childcare facilities nor took her outside the villa even once. It was also found that they beat her multiple times because she did not obey or eat well.
Despite receiving hospital treatment for arm pain caused by beating the child during the abuse period, they did not take any measures to bring the child to the hospital or provide treatment.
