POSCO Cheongam Foundation Holds 2020 POSCO Cheongam Awards Ceremony
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoonju Hwang] The POSCO Cheongam Foundation held the 14th '2020 POSCO Cheongam Awards' ceremony at the POSCO Center on the 8th.
At the ceremony, plaques and prize money of 200 million KRW each were awarded to Dr. Hong Seong-yu, head of the Korea Numerical Weather Prediction Model Development Project Group, for the Science Award; Don Bosco Vocational School for the Education Award; Lee Ran-ju, representative of the Asia Human Rights and Culture Solidarity, for the Volunteer Award; and Heo Yeom, CEO of Silicon Mites, for the Technology Award.
This year's ceremony was held with a minimum number of attendees, including the awardees and some foundation officials, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Dr. Hong Seong-yu, the recipient of the Science Award, is a world-class expert in atmospheric numerical modeling. Since 2014, he has served as the second head of the Korea Numerical Weather Prediction Model Development Project Group (KIAPS), leading the independent development of a 'numerical weather prediction model' optimized for Korea's meteorological environment, significantly contributing to Korea's rise as a top-five global leader in weather forecasting.
A numerical weather prediction model is important software that predicts future weather conditions by processing vast meteorological data using computer science. The 'Cubed-Sphere Global Operational Numerical Weather Prediction Model,' independently developed by the Korea Numerical Weather Prediction Model Project Group led by Dr. Hong after over five years of research, is scheduled to be officially used in the Korea Meteorological Administration's weather forecasts starting from the first half of this year.
In addition, the Education Award was given to Don Bosco Vocational School, the Volunteer Award to Lee Ran-ju, representative of the Asia Human Rights and Culture Solidarity, and the Technology Award to Heo Yeom, CEO of Silicon Mites.
