43 People Caught in Drunk Driving Crackdown in Seo-gu, Gwangju Since the 13th of Last Month
Seobu Police Station Strengthens Selective Drunk Driving Crackdown... Promotion Including Banner Posting
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Seobu Police Station (Chief Im Kwangmoon) announced on the 6th that a total of 43 people were caught in selective drunk driving crackdowns implemented since the 13th of last month amid social distancing recommendations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To dispel the misconception that drunk driving enforcement was not being conducted due to COVID-19 and to raise awareness about drunk driving, a comprehensive drunk driving crackdown was carried out using the 'S-shaped trap technique.'
The 'S-shaped trap drunk driving enforcement technique' involves creating an S-shaped driving line on the road using safety warning lights and cone lights to slowly guide vehicles through. Vehicles suspected of drunk driving, which lose their sense of direction and fail to properly pass through the S-shaped section, are selected for breathalyzer testing. This method was introduced as a countermeasure after one-on-one contact enforcement loosened due to the spread of COVID-19, leading to a nationwide surge in drunk driving accidents.
In addition, the Seobu Police Station selected areas prone to drunk driving such as entertainment districts and food alleyways, as well as locations where drunk driving traffic accidents occurred, and conducted spot checks lasting 20 to 30 minutes before moving to another location. This approach aims to suppress the atmosphere of drunk driving and prevent traffic accidents.
Furthermore, banners announcing drunk driving enforcement were posted at 20 locations including intersections with heavy vehicle traffic and entertainment district clusters within the jurisdiction.
In particular, banners stating 'Drunk driving enforcement ongoing regardless of COVID-19' were posted at busy intersections such as Uncheon Reservoir Intersection, Gyesu Intersection, and Punggeum Intersection, actively promoting the creation of an atmosphere to eradicate drunk driving.
Chief Im Kwangmoon said, “There is a growing misconception that enforcement is being neglected as the police have shifted to selective drunk driving crackdowns due to COVID-19. Drunk driving is a crime that has an irreparable impact on myself, my family, and the families of victims during these difficult times for all citizens.”
