Reexamining the 'Daniela Perez Murder Case' That Changed Brazil's Criminal Code
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Hee-eun Park] The murder case of famous Brazilian actress Daniela Perez is being reexamined.
On the 29th, MBC's 'Mystery TV Surprise' aired an episode covering the case of 22-year-old rising actress Daniela Perez, who was gaining recognition in Brazil, being murdered by a fellow male actor and his wife.
She was appearing in the daily drama 'Body and Soul,' which in 1992 had ratings approaching 70%. Perez was killed by the drama's male actor Guilherme de P?dua and his wife Paula Thomaz.
Regarding the motive for the murder, Thomaz said, "I couldn't stand him acting as my husband's lover," and it was revealed that her husband P?dua was behind her. P?dua also said, "I was passionate about doing my debut work, but as Perez's popularity grew, my role diminished."
In fact, P?dua's character was altered due to Perez's popularity, and a new character was added to the storyline. Since the drama's writer was Perez's mother, P?dua could only hear from the writer about "the audience's demands."
Eventually, the couple lured Perez out under the pretext of the script, murdered her, and disposed of the body together.

The court sentenced P?dua to 19 years in prison and released his wife Thomaz. However, P?dua later received a reduced sentence and was released from prison after six years. In response, the bereaved families launched a petition campaign and legal battle, leading to the enactment of a law in Brazil that strictly punishes violent crimes.
