Confirmed Cases Among International Students in Gangnam-gu Rise to 11
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] On the 28th, a total of six new COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed in Gangnam-gu, including three international students from the United States and the United Kingdom.
This brings the total number of confirmed international student cases in Gangnam-gu to 11.
A 24-year-old female university student studying in New York, USA, arrived at Incheon International Airport at 4:20 PM on the 25th via Korean Air flight KE082 from New York due to school closure. She stayed only at her home in Dogok-dong without going outside. Although she showed no unusual symptoms, she was tested at Gangnam-gu Public Health Center on the afternoon of the 27th out of concern as an international student, and was confirmed positive on the 28th.
A 16-year-old high school student attending a high school in central Kansas, USA, also arrived at Incheon Airport at 5:30 PM on the 24th via Delta Air Lines flight DL0159 from Detroit due to school closure. While staying at home in Daechi-dong, he developed symptoms including cough, muscle pain, diarrhea, and headache from the morning of the 26th. He was tested at Gangnam-gu Public Health Center on the morning of the 27th and confirmed positive on the 28th.
Additionally, a 19-year-old male university student studying at a university in London, UK, arrived at Incheon Airport at around 7 AM on the 27th via Asiana Airlines flight OZ5223 from London Heathrow Airport due to school closure. Although he had no special symptoms, he immediately visited Gangnam-gu Public Health Center for testing and was confirmed positive on the 28th.
A 43-year-old woman, who arrived at Incheon Airport at 5:30 PM on the 18th via Japan Airlines flight JAL8951 from Narita Airport, Japan, along with her elementary school-aged daughter studying in London, UK, stayed in self-quarantine at their home in Dogok-dong until the 26th. On the afternoon of the 26th, she developed a high fever of 37.8°C, chills, and muscle pain. She was tested at Gangnam Severance Hospital on the morning of the 27th and confirmed positive on the morning of the 28th.
A 56-year-old male self-employed businessman visited Seattle, USA, for business from the 4th for two weeks. He arrived at Incheon Airport at 4 PM on the 26th via Delta Air Lines flight DL199 from Seattle. He had no particular symptoms except for fatigue due to jet lag and insomnia. He was tested at Samsung Medical Center on the morning of the 27th and confirmed positive in the afternoon of the same day.
Lastly, a 25-year-old office worker living in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, who had contact with a confirmed case at his workplace in Gwanak-gu, underwent self-quarantine from the 12th to the 27th. He was tested at Gangnam-gu Public Health Center on the afternoon of the 27th and confirmed positive on the 28th.
Gangnam-gu notified the Incheon Airport Quarantine Station of the flight details for the five overseas arrivals and is conducting epidemiological investigations on these confirmed cases. Disinfection of apartments and movement paths is underway, and contacts are being quarantined. The confirmed cases are being transferred to hospitals.
Jung Soon-gyun, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated in a briefing, "Since March, 17 overseas arrivals including 11 international students in Gangnam-gu have been confirmed positive for COVID-19."
Therefore, those arriving from overseas such as the United States and Europe are strongly urged to get tested at Gangnam-gu Public Health Center, Samsung Medical Center, or Gangnam Severance Hospital within three days of arrival regardless of symptoms, and to strictly observe a two-week self-quarantine period.
