Busan 'Gijang-type Disaster Basic Income' Internet Applications Start Today
Due to concerns about COVID-19 infection, online and mail applications are encouraged... In-person applications accepted from April 6
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] The application for disaster basic income due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has been realized for the first time in Gijang-gun, Busan. The county announced that from 4 p.m. on the 27th, it will start accepting online applications for Gijang-type disaster basic income through the Gijang-gun website.
The eligible recipients of the Gijang-type disaster basic income are all residents who have been registered in Gijang-gun and are actually residing there before the 27th. Approximately 167,000 people will each receive 100,000 KRW in cash. Gijang-gun expects to provide a total of about 17 billion KRW in support.
To minimize contact among residents during the disaster basic income application process, Gijang-gun diversified the application methods into three options: ▲online application through the Gijang-gun website ▲mail application ▲on-site application by visiting the Eup/Myeon Administrative Welfare Centers (town offices).
Applications can be submitted until April 29. After the application is received, the county office will verify the information and deposit the cash into the applicant’s account within seven days from the application date.
After filling out the application form distributed to each household and placing it in the return envelope, residents in natural villages can apply via post office mail, and apartment residents can apply through the management office or post office mail. Since there is a risk of infection due to queuing and contact, the county asked residents to refrain from visiting the Eup/Myeon Administrative Welfare Centers for application submission as much as possible. The on-site application at the Eup/Myeon Administrative Welfare Centers will begin at 9 a.m. on April 6, when the government’s social distancing policy ends.
To minimize inconvenience to residents during the application process, the county eliminated all required documents except for the application form. For online or mail applications, only the disaster basic income application form needs to be completed. For on-site applications at the Eup/Myeon Administrative Welfare Centers, applicants only need to bring their ID and bankbook.

Oh Gyu-seok, the mayor of Gijang-gun, said, "From newborn babies to the elderly, all residents of Gijang-gun are facing the risk of the disaster called COVID-19. The principle and fundamental purpose of the disaster basic income is to provide fair and uniform support to all local residents regardless of personal property or income. Although the amount is small, I hope it will be a blessing to the local residents who are experiencing difficulties and to the struggling local economy."
