Chinese Doctors: "60% of Wuhan Infected Cases Are Asymptomatic and Unreported"
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] In Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, where the number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases and suspected cases both recorded '0', claims have been raised that about 60% of the infected individuals in Wuhan were asymptomatic patients omitted from government reports.
On the 25th, the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that a study led by a group of Chinese doctors reached this conclusion, and the related content was also published on the medical preprint site MedRxiv.
The doctors explained that more than 59% of the patients infected with COVID-19 in Wuhan were not registered as confirmed COVID-19 patients; these individuals were either asymptomatic or had very mild symptoms. As of March 18, approximately 26,252 people were infected but were not reported to the government as asymptomatic cases nor classified as confirmed patients.
In their paper, the doctors stated that if asymptomatic individuals were included as infected cases, the total number of infections as of February 18 could exceed 125,000.
Earlier, SCMP reported that confidential Chinese government documents confirmed that about 43,000 asymptomatic COVID-19 patients were missing from the official government statistics.
In academia, opinions are divided on whether COVID-19 can be transmitted by asymptomatic patients, so such revelations raise doubts about whether the spread of COVID-19 in Wuhan has been completely contained.
In Wuhan, Hubei Province, where confirmed COVID-19 cases were most concentrated, no confirmed or suspected cases were reported on the 24th. All 47 new confirmed cases were imported cases from overseas, meaning they were infected abroad and then diagnosed positive after entering China. The 33 newly added suspected cases in one day were also all reported as imported cases from overseas.
