Gwangju Police Warn Against Voice Phishing Including 'High-Paying Part-Time Job Ads'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency has urged caution to prevent voice phishing, such as 'high-paying part-time job recruitment ads.'
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency on the 24th, a total of 903 cases of voice phishing (telephone financial fraud) have occurred in the Gwangju area from 2017 to the present (as of February 2020).
There have been 2,101 arrests (3,068 people booked, 160 detained), and the amount of damage reached 19.02 billion KRW.
Many cases have occurred where scammers post job ads disguised as high-income part-time jobs on internet job advertisement sites and then use people who contact them as money collectors for voice phishing proceeds, prompting the police to issue a warning.
Senior members of voice phishing organizations post recruitment ads on internet job advertisement sites such as AlbaCheonguk and AlbaMon, pretending the jobs are normal tasks like simple delivery work, recruiting people by promising earnings of 100,000 to 150,000 KRW per task.
Those who are lured by the temptation of 'simple part-time jobs, high-paying part-time jobs' and contact them are told they will receive additional pay, but after receiving cash from telephone financial fraud victims, they are instructed to transfer the money to a designated account.
If you receive cash from a victim and deliver it, you can be punished as an accomplice to voice phishing and may be detained.
In particular, if the job instructions are given by phone or messenger without a proper interview, or if suspicious behaviors such as 'taking a photo of the place where money is received and sending it, not talking to the person giving the money, introducing yourself as a 000 deputy of the Financial Services Commission' are instructed, the police explain that it is highly likely to be voice phishing disguised as a high-paying part-time job.

A representative of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency said, "Senior members of voice phishing organizations use money collectors on a one-time basis to receive cash from victims and continuously recruit them," adding, "Special caution is required not to be tempted by the lure of guaranteed high income, and if voice phishing is suspected, it should be stopped immediately."
