[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) is launching the '2020 New Spring Cleaning' campaign to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community and thoroughly clean the accumulated grime in every corner of the city during winter, contributing to the creation of a healthy city, Jongno.
The period is from March 23 to April 6.
In addition to disinfection and environmental maintenance of public offices and major facilities in the area, efforts will be made to wash away fine dust and calcium chloride remaining on the roads with water.
Common measures include promoting disinfection work to prevent the spread of COVID-19. ▲For public offices, internal and external environmental maintenance will be conducted. ▲Roads and sidewalks will be washed with water, road-related facilities will be cleaned and repaired, and roadside rainwater drains will be meticulously cleaned of cigarette butts and trash. ▲Public facilities will be maintained around street vendors and cleaned along street trees and green areas. ▲Multi-use facilities will have old trash on rooftops cleaned, and construction site barriers will also be maintained.
Following this, on Wednesday, March 25, the district office officials and sanitation workers will participate in a pilot event called ‘New Spring Cleaning Day’ around Gwanghwamun Square to overcome COVID-19.
To practice ‘social distancing,’ a minimum number of participants will be organized for cleaning, and 15 various related equipment such as water cleaning vehicles, street cleaning vehicles, and cleaning robots will be mobilized to carry out a large-scale removal of accumulated grime. Participants will gather at 7 a.m. in front of the King Sejong statue to begin cleaning.
Meanwhile, Jongno-gu plans to focus on road cleaning during the cleaning period with the goal of reducing fine dust.

Main arterial roads with six or more lanes will be cleaned daily, general roads with two to four lanes will be cleaned every two days, and other alleys will be cleaned at least once a week with water washing, street cleaning, and dust suction cleaning. Additionally, water cleaning of sidewalks will be promoted targeting main arterial road sidewalks, illegal dumping areas, and odor generation areas.
District Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “Since 2010, Jongno-gu has been steadily conducting road water cleaning using water cleaning and dust suction vehicles. After water cleaning, dust suction vehicles suck up the remaining fine dust to minimize road dust, striving to create a clean and pleasant community.” He added, “We ask for the active participation of residents in this cleaning campaign to contribute to preventing the spread of COVID-19 and to keep every corner of the district clean.”
