Lotte Mart Launches 'Stray Dog Adoption Campaign' at All Stores Nationwide
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Lotte Mart announced on the 24th that it will conduct a "Stray Dog Adoption Campaign" at all stores nationwide from the 26th of this month until the 30th of next month.
This campaign was launched in collaboration with "SBS TV Animal Farm" and "Animal Freedom Coalition" to raise awareness about stray dogs, which have emerged as a social issue amid the growth of the pet industry.
Lotte Mart decided to participate in this campaign because the pet industry has recently expanded, with the number of "petfam" (pet + family, people who consider animals as family) reaching 15 million. According to the Korea Rural Economic Institute, the domestic pet market size increased from 1.5684 trillion won in 2014 to 3.002 trillion won in 2019.
Along with the growth of the pet market, social interest in abandoned pets is also increasing. Accordingly, local governments are operating shelters to provide social protection for stray dogs. However, shelters are severely insufficient compared to the rapidly increasing number of stray dogs, and stray dogs sent to shelters are euthanized if no adopter appears within 15 days.
In response, Lotte Mart is collaborating with eight companies including Lotte Chilsung and Lotte Confectionery to release products featuring characters shaped like companion dogs on the packaging of 17 popular products, allowing customers to naturally encounter the stray dog adoption campaign. Customers who purchase these products can receive various benefits such as up to 20% price discounts and discount coupons.
The packaging of these products is printed with the phrase "Don't buy, adopt," which is expected to raise social interest in stray dog adoption. In fact, when customers scan the QR code inside the package, they are directed to the Animal Freedom Coalition adoption site where they can apply for adoption directly.
Currently, various TV programs are actively conducting adoption campaigns for stray dogs, and Lotte Mart plans to support the expansion of the stray dog adoption campaign. In particular, it aims to encourage social participation so that stray dogs can be adopted into good homes and raise awareness about the importance of life by warning against the easy abandonment and easy adoption of companion animals.
Lotte Mart plans to continue preparing various sustainable campaigns in the future to promote value-sharing activities that induce changes in awareness of social issues.
