Eight Small Churches Hold Services Over Weekend in Daegu ... "Compliance with Guidelines Maintained"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Young-wook] As a result of a special inspection of local religious facilities conducted by Daegu City last weekend, it was found that no religious facilities held worship services excessively.
Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin held a regular briefing on the 23rd and said, "Among general churches, there were concerning aspects such as 600 believers participating in 12 worship services over the weekend at eight small-scale churches. However, religious facilities were complying with the COVID-19 guidelines, and no violations were found."
In Daegu, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the five major religions including Catholicism, Buddhism, and Christianity have voluntarily taken the lead in suspending masses, closing temple gates, and halting worship services. The Daegu Christian Council also voluntarily resolved to suspend Sunday collective worship services and repeatedly requested this from each church.
However, as some religious facilities expressed their intention to proceed with collective worship services, the city deployed an inspection team of about 80 people on the 22nd, including 36 city employees, 10 district office officials, and 33 police officers, to conduct on-site guidance and inspections.
As a result of the inspection, no abnormalities were found at the Shincheonji headquarters church and its 51 affiliated facilities, which have been ordered to close until the 24th.
