Yongsan-gu to Implement Thursday Disposal System for Waste Vinyl and PET Bottles in the Second Half of This Year
53 Colorless PET Bottle-Only Collection Bins Installed... Pilot Operation of 'Thursday Waste Vinyl & PET Bottle Disposal System' from May... Full Implementation Planned in Second Half of Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The waste problem is becoming increasingly serious. Recycling separation is not properly carried out in detached houses and commercial areas. It is common to mix all kinds of recyclables in black bags that are difficult to check the contents. Waste contaminated with foreign substances or not properly separated is classified as residual waste, causing side effects such as environmental pollution and increased processing costs.
Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Seong Changhyun) plans to pilot the ‘Thursday Disposal System for Waste Vinyl and PET Bottles’ targeting detached houses and commercial areas as early as May.
This is to utilize high-quality waste vinyl and colorless (transparent) beverage and water PET bottles as high-quality recycled raw materials.
The process is simple. Waste vinyl (regardless of color or type) should be placed in transparent or semi-transparent bags, and colorless PET bottles such as beverage and water bottles should be separated from colored PET bottles and placed in transparent or semi-transparent bags or colorless PET bottle-specific bags, then disposed of in front of the house every Thursday.
Other recyclables besides waste vinyl and colorless PET bottles cannot be disposed of on this day.
For apartment complexes, residents should continue to separate and dispose of recyclables on designated days as before. However, colorless PET bottles must be disposed of separately from colored PET bottles and general plastics. It is also recommended to remove labels attached to PET bottles.
The district plans to fully implement the system in the second half of the year after a trial period. The specific implementation date will be determined depending on the COVID-19 situation.
As a preparation step for the system implementation, the district will install colorless PET bottle-specific collection bins at 53 recycling stations (recycling collection boxes for detached house areas) within the district this month. This will be done by adding a ‘transparent PET’ section to the existing five compartments: ‘paper,’ ‘bottles,’ ‘cans,’ ‘vinyl,’ and ‘plastic & PET.’
Colored PET bottles and general plastics should be disposed of in the ‘plastic & PET’ compartment.
Additionally, the district plans to distribute colorless PET bottle-specific bags to each detached house unit in consultation with Seoul City.
