Yeosu City, Green Light for Inclusion in National Plan at 2022 UN Climate Change Convention of Parties
Ministry of Economy and Finance Passes COP28 International Event Review, Ministry of Environment Begins Feasibility Study Early This Month
One Million Signature Campaign and Hosting Boom, Citizen Movement in 10 Cities and Counties of Southern Coast
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] A green light has been turned on for the inclusion of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (hereinafter COP28) in the national plan, which Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do, is making every effort to attract.
According to Yeosu City on the 19th, following the final selection in the Ministry of Strategy and Finance's international event COP28 attraction evaluation on the 20th of last month, it was confirmed that the Ministry of Environment, the competent ministry, also initiated a feasibility study service with the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy earlier this month.
As the government is actively moving forward, including actively considering attracting COP28 at the P4G Summit to be held at the end of June this year during the president's work report last month, Yeosu City is carrying out large-scale attraction activities to secure the hosting of COP28.
Last year, the Civil Society Promotion Committee and the Attraction Committee were launched, and the COP28 attraction feasibility study service was completed in March this year. For the inclusion in the national plan at the government level and to secure the attraction, active government-level activities were carried out with the Blue House and the Ministry of Environment, and Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon and Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung also promised active support.
Also, as part of securing the attraction in the southern central region of the South Coast, they launched a campaign to create a public attraction boom targeting citizens through SNS, an online and offline signature campaign with one million participants, production and distribution of promotional stickers for vehicle attachment and leaflets, and pedestrian overpass banners.
This month, the Council of Mayors and County Heads of 22 cities and counties in Jeollanam-do also joined in signing support for the joint attraction of COP28 in the southern central region of the South Coast.
In the future, once COVID-19 subsides, they plan to start a relay citizen resolution rally in towns and townships to pray for the attraction of COP28, hold a southern central region of the South Coast attraction declaration ceremony through a National Assembly forum, and carry out various activities such as a bicycle campaign touring 10 cities and counties in the southern central region of the South Coast and street performances.
